Fear and Persuasion Used as Leadership
Those in position of power use fear and persuasion as an example of leadership,
especially in the movie “The Crucible” and,the “Speech to the VIrginia Convention” by
Patrick Henry.Powerful people who use fear and persuasion as a tool of leadership tend
to be the most powerful leaders.Throughout “The Crucible” Abby, one of the main
characters, shows a powerful leader by using fear and persuasion. In the “Speech to the
Virginia Convention” he also, shows leadership through fear and persuasion during his
speech. In “The Crucible” Abby,a very powerful young lady, represents fear and persuasion. Fear was being shown by Abby pretending to fear Mary as a witch took over
her soul.“Mary please don’t hurt me!” Once Abby showed fear to the non-existing witch,
all the other girls followed Abby in fear of the Mary.Abby represented persuasion by telling the girls if they told a single soul about the other things that had happened in the woods
that weren’t already mentioned, she would kill them.”And mark this, let either of you
breathe a word,or the edge of a word about the other things and I will come to you in the
black of some terrible night and I will shudder you.” Manipulation is shown because Abby is telling the girls she will let them live if they don’t tell a single soul about what happened
as they were in the woods. There was another example of persuasion represented through Abby. She persuaded the townspeople to think that the town had been invaded by the devil. Betty yells, “I saw George Jacobs with the devil!I saw Goody Howe with the
devil!” The townspeople started accusing innocent people of witchcraft.Fear and persuasion is a great tool of leadership and Abby wouldn’t of been such a successful young leader if it weren’t for those two great tools. In the “Speech to the Virginia Convention” By,Patrick Henry,he does an adequate job of using fear and persuasion as a tool of leadership. Patrick Henry was fearless in his speech which made his speech so great and powerful.”Almighty god! I know not what course others may take;but as for me,give me liberty,or give me death!” Patrick,is stating that he would rather be dead then a slave because thats no way to live,in his opinion. Earlier in his speech Patrick is very persuasive by saying if they don’t fight for freedom they won’t have it and they will be dead or a slave.”I consider it as nothing less than a question of freedom or slavery.”Asking the people if they would rather fight for their freedom and have a chance or not fight at all and know they have no chance at freedom. Patrick Henry becomes more persuasive throughout the speech. The sentence,”I have but one lamp by which my feet guided;and that is the lamp of experience.” Saying,if you follow him,he will lead you in the right way because he knows what he is doing. Henry was a powerful leader because of the fear and manipulation he used during his powerful speech.
Fear and persuasion is a very powerful tool and necessity when it comes to
leadership. The most powerful leaders are those who use fear and manipulation. Abby
from the crucible and Patrick Henry are great examples of leaders and use the best tool
you could use to become a powerful successful leader, persuasion and fear.
